Brno, Czech Rep., Nov 5 (BD) – According to the latest figures from Brno Municipality [13:46], the strike action was due to affect 28 primary schools in Brno (18 full closures, 10 partial closures) and 11 kindergartens (8 full closures, 3 partial closures).
The strike was called by the Teachers’ Union following what they consider to be inadequate salary rises offered by the government. Prime Minister Andrej Babis originally promised that teachers’ salaries would rise by 15%, split between tax breaks and wages, but on Monday legislators voted instead for an increased package of just 8%, with a further 2% to go to heads of schools for a teacher reward system.
Despite being university educated workers, the current salary of a Czech schoolteacher is just 64% of the overall average wage for university educated people, which according to the Pedagogical Chamber is the lowest ratio in the European Union and the OECD.
