The Exhibition centre Main Entrance and the Central Cemetery are the first two public transport stops in Brno where green roofs have been installed. Two more will be added by the end of the year, at Anthropos and Mendlovo náměstí. Suitable locations for the special roofs were selected by the Brno city management, and production and assembly was carried out by the Brno Transport Company, DPMB. Brno, Dec 12 (BD) – “I am very pleased that we have managed to install the first roofs before the end of the year, as we promised in the summer. They will bring comfort to Brno residents while traveling, and moreover we can see something brand new to Brno – green shelters – for the first time,” said Mayor of Brno Markéta Vaňková.
The green design is colourful and nearly maintenance-free. Specifically, the roofs of the shelters are planted with houseleeks and stonecrops, low-maintenance plants which do not need to be watered or drained of excess water. They only need fertilizing once a year, which will be managed by DPMB alongside normal maintenance.
The advantage of the green solution, as well as improving the visual appearance of the entire location, is that it absorbs the sun’s rays and thus protects passengers on hot summer days.
“This is a trial series, allowing us to test the environmental benefits and improve the quality of public spaces,” said city councilor for transport Petr Kratochvíl. The locations for future “green shelters” will be selected soon.
Public transport vehicles serve 1,450 stops in Brno, of which 573 have shelters.
