Brno, Jun 1 (BD) – The National Theatre of Brno, which has been on hold since mid-March because of the restrictions against the spread of COVID-19, has announced that it will scrap the remainder of the 2019-20 season (but close it on a high note with a free outdoor concert), present six outdoor operas during the summer, and start the 2020-21 season early.
Tickets for 24 performances go on sale today (June 1). Click here for more information in English.
And this is all in addition to the seventh Janáček Brno International Festival, which will begin on Sept. 28.

Rather than attempt to restart the 2019-20 season, NdB made the decision to cancel it completely. The main reasons were that, for the next couple of months, only every third seat would be available for audience members, and the associated costs of restarting the productions would only further burden the overall budget.
Nevertheless, the season will have a final send off on July 1 with an open-air concert on the piazzetta in front of the Janáček Theater. The event, which is free, starts at 7 p.m.
As normal, Opera at Špilberk will settle into the courtyard of Špilberk Castle for performances of The Barber of Seville (June 30 and Sept. 1), Nabucco (July 2 and Aug. 30), La Traviata (July 3) and Carmen (Aug. 29).
Then, in August, a bit earlier than normal, the 2020-21 season will commence. There are six new titles that will be performed in the three theaters:
• Four new plays will be performed at Reduta Theatre (in Czech), including the Martin McDonagh play Velmi, velmi, velmi temný příběh (A Very Very Very Dark Matter) on Aug. 21 and 22 and the comedy Slaměný klobouk (Straw Hat) on Aug. 28 and 29.
• The ballet Radio and Juliet, with music by Radiohead, will be performed on Aug. 8, 9 and 10 at Mahen Theater, with additional performances later in the season; and
• The family opera Ferda Mravenec (Ferdy the Ant) will have performances on Aug. 22 and 23 at Janáček Theater, with additional performances.
The tickets are being sold according to the current regulations and at discounted prices. More options will become available when restrictions are further relaxed.
