Brno, Sep 26, (BD) – JazzFest Brno is the best-known international contemporary jazz festival in the Czech Republic. The festival was born in 2002 as a weekend event, but over the years it has become an extended high-profile cultural season thanks to the high quality of the music, which has led it to become one of the most important jazz events in Central Europe.
Internationally renowned artists and local musicians have the opportunity to meet and draw in jazz lovers into an original fusion that blends pure improvisation with more mainstream performances.
History of the Festival
For its first edition, the festival was conceived as a three-day event. At the time, local and foreign artists ventured into a very successful improvisation, and ever since then the jam session has become the distinctive feature of the JazzFest.
In subsequent years, JazzFest has become increasingly well-known and esteemed. An ever-increasing number of international artists want to participate in the event, many of whom are foreign musicians who have performed in the Czech Republic for the first time.
The event has extended in duration year after year, from the initial three days to the current three months.
Over the years, the JazzFest has had the honor of hosting well-known names in the jazz scene: singer Diane Schuur, American singer Nnenna Freelon, nine-time Grammy winner Eddie Palmieri, Brazilian singer and pianist Eliane Elias in a trio with Marc Johnson and Adam Nussbaum, the Czech organist Ondřej Pivec, and Grammy Award-winning Gregory Porter.
The JazzFest began on September 16th and will end on December 16th. The hip-hop, R’n’B and jazz sounds of the Gerald Clayton Trio opened the first evening of the event.
This weekend has seen concerts from the Shai Maestro Quartet at the Cabaret des Péchés and the performance of František Uhlíř 70 and Vincenc Kummer 80, both at Divadlo Husa na provázku. The last concert of the month will feature the Bill Frisell Trio at Sono Centrum on September 28th.
