On October 1, 2021, the Brno City Museum will open a new regular tour of Špilberk Castle: the southwest bastion. The labyrinth of corridors and chambers inside the massive promontory of the castle fortifications played an important role in the Swedish siege of Brno. Brno, Oct 5 (BD) – “Everybody knows the early bell ringing at Petrov, but the city’s defense against General Torstenson’s army would not have been possible without the southwestern bastion,” explained the director of the Brno City Museum, Zbyněk Šolc. “It was the bastion that ensured the impregnability of Špilberk, and thus the successful defense of Brno. Therefore, we want to present this important place in the history of our city to the public on regular guided tours.”
Špilberk Castle, then more accurately a fortress, faced a huge onslaught of Swedes from the west. The so-called south-western bastion, a massive promontory of the walls of Špilberk, is home to an impressive labyrinth of corridors and chambers, which served the defenders of Brno when the city was unsuccessfully besieged by the Swedish army in 1645.
In today’s restored bastion, visitors will see the original fragments of the defense system and literally walk in the footsteps of the past brave soldiers. More information on tickets and opening times can be found at spilberk.cz.
